Are real time strategy games dead. If rts should evolve, it must keep the roots. It has rts elements but its not entirely an rts. Both are subgenres of strategy games.

Personally i don't like turn based strategy games normally, but that is not because they are bad, i just like reacting to situations in real time and watching my carefully laid plans. The attempt to make a free to play c&c apparently failed as. However, i wouldn't call it dead since we're still getting rts game releases.

Rts divided attention too many ways, and the so called “moba’s” aren’t, tehy are just real time strategy games without the base management. Maybe the building is an essential part, but maybe a game with a factory already built and so units are more important?

The campaign map has turn based gameplay but the battles are where the real time strategy components come from. Stellaris is also amazing (but still falls in the category of outdated engines). The reason rts died is because of flaws in the design, the player is a satellite camera in orbit who merely manages units from above, that leaves no time to enjoy the fights or the graphics.

Once a genre that everyone played, it now is relegated to a small little niche that only few want to interact with anymore. The imprint of dune ii and command & conquer is still present in many current releases, not to mention phenomena such as warcraft and starcraft, the game that started the esports fever.
